Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

Typically-developing children acquire new language skills in a wide variety of natural situations, such as during play or mealtimes.  Skilled parents and caregivers teach children in a natural manner, taking advantage a child’s momentary interests or desires.  We call these opportunities “child-directed” or “child-led.”  Researchers have identified critical elements of these natural teaching opportunities and at Coyne & Associates, we systematically utilize NET to promote verbal skills.  It looks like play, but there is a lot of teaching going on in this clip!

Becoming a “Listener”

In contrast to NET, sometimes children with whom we work require us to “deconstruct” the skill, and then teach it in small, incremental stages. If you watch this entire video clip, you will see how the instructor teaches the child to identify common objects over the course of many discrete steps: the imitation step, mirror field; imitation step, non-mirror field; matching three nonverbal sounds to corresponding objects; discrimination of one spoken word and two nonverbal sounds; discrimination of two spoken words and one nonverbal sound; discrimination of three spoken words. (And look at the great eye contact of the learner, the first skill we taught!!)
